About the Edition

The book gives an account of the most recent development in the understanding of the essential trace element selenium with respect to its role in animals and man. It is divided into five sections covering biochemistry, metabolism, pharmacology, human nutrition and epidemiology, and the interaction of selenium with malignant diseases. Primary new information is available on the synthesis of selenoproteins, metabolic selenium-dependent modulations in animals, and brand-new results on the development of a new, selenium-containing anti-inflammatory drug. For the first time, data from China are presented on the chronic toxicity of selenium in man. A critical appraisal of the debate on the anticarcinogenic effect of selenium is given. Recommended daily intakes of selenium for man and epidemiological data on different countries of the world are reported.

  1. Introduction. Selenium was discovered by the Swedish chemist Jöns Jakob Berzelius in and was considered a toxic element for humans and livestock for nearly years [].However, in , the benefits of selenium for humans and other mammals were revealed in landmark studies by Klaus Schwartz and Calvin Foltz who demonstrated that dietary selenium protected rats against liver Cited by: Roles of selenium in immune function. Selenium is an important micronutrient in the diet of humans and other mammals. It is known to serve a wide variety of functions in health and development including roles in cancer and heart disease prevention, viral inhibition, male reproduction and immune function, and roles in delaying the aging process and the onset of AIDS in HIV positive patients ().Cited by:

Starting with investigations over 60 years ago into its role as a toxic agent in livestock disease, selenium studies have progressed rapidly with the application of tools from immunology and molecular biology.

Organoselenium shows incredible promise in medicine, particularly cancer therapy. This book discusses organoselenium chemistry and biology in the context of its therapeutic potential, taking the reader through synthetic techniques, bioactivity and therapeutic applications.

Divided into three sections, the first section describes synthetic advances in bioactive selenium compounds, revealing how. Selenium is an essential micronutrient in mammals, but is also recognized as toxic in excess.

Selenium exerts its biological functions through selenoproteins, which contain the amino acid selenocysteine. Twenty-five selenoproteins are encoded in the human genome.

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace nutrient required for optimal human health. It has long been suggested that selenium has anti-cancer properties. However, clinical trials have shown inconclusive results on the potential of Se to prevent cancer.

The suggested role of Se in the prevention of cancer is centered around its role as an antioxidant. Recently, the potential of selenium as a drug. Free Radical Biology and Medicine.

Abstract. Several decades after the discovery of selenium as an essential trace element in vertebrates approximately 20 eukaryotic and more than 15 prokaryotic selenoproteins containing the 21 st proteinogenic amino acid, selenocysteine, have been identified, partially characterized or cloned from several species.

Many of these proteins are involved in redox reactions with selenocysteine Cited by:   Abstract. Selenium (Se) is both an essential micronutrient for animals and humans and potentially toxic at relatively low intakes. Total soil Se is usually low (–2 mg/kg), but parts of China, India and the USA have toxic soil Se levels.
